Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) is damage to the spinal cord that results in a loss of function such as mobility or feeling. The spinal cord does not have to be severed in order for a loss of functioning to occur. In fact, in most people with SCI, the spinal cord is intact, but the damage to it results in loss of functioning. The most common cause of SCI is motor vehicle crashes, accounting for at least 36 percent of these injuries. Falls cause 21 percent of SCI cases.
In spinal cord injury cases it is crucial for the attorney to thoroughly study the medical records and confer with the treating physicians, therapists, and other medical care providers to fully understand the lifelong consequences of the client’s injury. The attorney must then assemble a team of expert witnesses to prove at trial the exorbitant expenses required to provide lifelong medical, in-home care, rehabilitation, and other expenses. In a serious SCI case, these expenses are usually millions of dollars.
